Nestor Fernandes received a BSc degree in organic Chemistry from the University of Mumbai and a Diploma of Petroleum Geology from the Victoria University in New Zealand.

He carried out field work in the onshore and offshore Taranaki Basin before moving to Australia and carrying out field work in the onshore Australian basins. This included both conventional oil and gas exploration and coal seam gas exploration and development.
